Objective: To quantify how thermal cycling influences marginal leakage, color, and microhardness of cervical restorations in two dental resins.
One hundred and twenty probes were fabricated using 3M Filtex Z350 XT and Dentsply Spectra Smart resins. These were randomly divided into a control group and three groups subjected to 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 thermal cycles between 5°C and 55°C to evaluate color and microhardness.
Microleakage: Forty-four Class V molar restorations were restored. They underwent the same thermal cycling regimen. Subsequently, they were immersed in 2% methylene blue, sectioned longitudinally, and observed under a 10x optical microscope.
The data were analyzed statistically, descriptively and then inferentially using non-parametric tests (Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests) for comparing means, with a significance level of 5%.
There were statistically significant differences in color in all groups for both materials compared to the control group.
Microhardness decreased in all groups with both materials, but the statistically significant values were those at 20,000 and 30,000 cycles compared to the control group.
Microleakage: the cervical wall of all groups in both materials showed greater leakage. The values were statistically significant for Spectra Smart, but not for Filtex Z350 XT.
